Demise of the MBT?

 A New Kind of Warfare!

The battlefield is a developing place in tactics and technology, ever since Cain killed his brother Able out of jealousy and ever since then most wars stem from bitterness and hatred of each other and at the cost of human life soldiers and civilians?

Enemies come and go, so do causes, but also criminal cartels, dictatorships and maniacs wanting to rule the world. The origins of the Main battle tank stem from World War I (1914-18) and was invented by the British with everyone following to this present day, but not all nations use this type of vehicle opting more for the personnel carrier or armored recon vehicles.

These first tanks were clumsy, but one has to start somewhere and by World War-11 very little had changed, since it was believed that the last war would be the one to end all? The Soviet Union developed a light machine known as the T-34 to outrun the Nazi-German heavy tanks, which were better in pack operations but not isolated in the open steppe!

It was after 1945 that what we understand in shape and design of these vehicles came to the fore, the U.S. Sherman and successive designs up to the present Abrahams, Israel Merkava, Russian t-90 and their electronic countermeasures or deflection equipment. 

But the last few wars in Iraq proved that the days of this type of armor were really coming to and end, missile guided and drones can be very effective now in most weather conditions and the role of helicopters and lighter vehicles equally.

Logistics. One.

Behind every great Army!

Logistics is a specialist field of organisation that is in its own right a calling and discipline and when it is implemented in a right manner any military, civil or humanitarian operation will be a success to only the point of human failure somewhere in the machine of organisation?

When we see the last of these great military parades today of tanks and missiles, artillery and marching soldiers around the world and even the changing of the guard, there is much organisation and infrastructure behind all this pomp that is never seen by the mainstream general public?

If one has worked as a caretaker or specialises in events management, then you have the advantage of having the ability to change the seating layout for over one-hundred people at short notice?

This means moving whole rows without dismantling them down to individual seats and so this is the same with support and logistics?

Fire Engines. Part-One.

Bonfires.

In a few days time, the emergency services will be stretched to their limit dealing with bonfire night and the madness of some people. Here in Wales the Fire Brigade has to deal with regular arsonists every dry period, lighting gorse fires.

But generally Halloween and Guy Fawkes night 31st October and the 5th November are the big nights. The need for a fire truck has been around probably ever since man could carry water on a cart? But it is really only in the last 200 years that some type of what we term 'Fire Engines have been developed to deal with house fires.

In the United States they are known as ladders, because they had to deal with tenement fires and later the early 19th Century sky scrapers. The first horse drawn tankers took full advantage of water pumping systems and were able to cope, despite being very limited. it was not until the 1920's that the first motorised trucks were designed as we see them today.

Military Armour.

This like many other airshows throught the United Kingdom is about fresh recruitment to the British Armed forces and apart from the aircraft on show were a variety of military vehicles from heavey armour such as the Vickers Challenger-II Main Battle Tank boasting a 122mm gun to various logistics vehicles Mack refuelling tanker, MAN trucks, and the Okohosh heavy transport.

The Supacat Coyote 4x4 three man armoured car and the Alvis Scimitar with a 30mm canon, which is part of the Scorpion tracked Armoured Reconnaisance family.  The Vickers AS90 Self-Porpelled Gun 155mm was another of the heavies, in service since 1986.

There were reported to be a Warrior APC and 105mm field Artillery on display, but I did not see them! There wer also a selection of Land Rovers and Range Rovers both Army and RAF and various Civil Scania tank and heavey transporters.

Does the ARV still have a value?

Ever army needs reconnaissance, you need to know where the other side is, how many of them and what equipment is being deployed. In the second world war (1939-45), various types from motorbike and side car to armoured cars were deployed.

But in desert conditions small light tanks, such as the Crusader, German and American half-tracks were deployed. Special forces used there own adaptions based on the Rolls-Royce car chassis and later the American Willy's Jeep.

Today some wheeled and tracked vehicle's have been designed such as the Scorpion tank and variants from it. These vehicles are limited in armour, so if they get hit they are a small price to pay for in the reality of war and conflict.
